Cuts/Wounds

Symptoms
Skin is ruptured, you may see bleeding, oozing, may see bones sticking out of wound (see fracture)

First Aid
Gently clean area with a saline solution; remove dirt, stones, and glass as much as possible. Try to stop the bleeding by putting pressure on the area. Apply a sterile dressing/bandage; apply cold to the area for approximately ten minutes.

Follow Up
If wound is old keep it open by washing the crust of twice daily (specially bite abscesses in cats)
If wound is new and not caused by biting bring the animal in for suturing, older wounds or bite wounds can also be sutured but need wound refreshment and often a drain (for this you will need a Vet). Prevent your pet from constantly licking/scratching the area

Who are affected
Cats/dogs subject to accident, male (very often not castrated) cats/dogs that protect their territory and get into regular fights

What can be done to prevent this
Keep your pet under guidance as much as possible, i.e. keep your dog on a leash in a busy traffic area. Castrate your cat.
