First Aid in Companion Animals

It is beneficial for owners to learn first aid techniques that may be necessary to save their pet’s life.

Emergency Situations.

Before we start giving information on first aid in companion animals it is essential to contact your veterinarian immediately when you notice the following signs in your pet:

 

Emergency Signs

  • Stops breathing
  • Has lost consciousness
  • Has signs of shock (Pets in shock will be suddenly weak, have difficulty standing, and be relatively unaware of their surroundings. Pets in shock usually have pale gums, a rapid heart rate, and a low body temperature)
  • Has difficulty breathing
  • Has suffered from heat stroke (extremely high body temperature)
  • Has been suspect to poisoning
  • Has a severe reaction to an insect bite
  • Has seizures
  • Has difficulty urinating
  • Has severe bleeding (arterial bleeding or otherwise)
  • Collapses
  • Has a severe head injury
  • Choking
  • Has experienced drowning
  • Has suffered smoke inhalation
  • All other situations that you feel are an emergency. Better safe than sorry!!!
